The Providence Rink adds Roller Skating to Open Air Saturdays

Providence, RI (BNCC)– The Providence Rink and BankNewport City Center are teaming up with Open Air Saturdays to “Roll Through the Decades” in a brand new monthly program of fun on wheels for the whole family.

Pull out those poodle skirts and slick back your hair for the kick-off date on May 7, when the Rink will present a tribute to the Fabulous 50s. Doo-wop harmonies and golden oldies will  keep roller-skaters bopping and rocking throughout the day. Each month will feature a focus on a different decade, continuing through the Groovy 60s on June 7 and the Funky 70s on July 2.

“The success of our Thursday and Friday-night Roller Disco series has shown there’s a huge demand for family-friendly roller skate programming in Providence,” City Center General Manager Brant Gawrys said. “Open Air Saturdays has been a tremendous boost to our neighbors and business partners during the pandemic, and we’re excited to give folks another reason to explore what downtown has to offer in the warmer months.”

The program will run from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is just $7 and allows for a full day of skating. A range of sizes in both rollerblades and traditional quads will be available to rent for an additional $7. The Trinity Beer Garden is open all day in nearby Burnside Park with plenty of craft beer and cocktails for thirsty adults. Open Air Saturdays is held the first Saturday of the month, and features vendors, food trucks, live music and much more. Sponsored by InDowncity and Cornish Associates, the event closes off blocks along Westminster Street. and Washington Street to traffic, allowing visitors to experience Downtown Providence in a whole new light.

“InDowncity is thrilled to welcome so many new partners to the Open Air Saturday program,” said Joanna Levitt, Director of Commercial Leasing and Marketing for Cornish Associates and InDowncity. “Guests can plan an entire day of strolling the various event locations, taking in unique programming at each.”
